Under His Authority — Matthew 8:8–9 devotional cover

Sometimes the weight of life and the situations we face can produce doubt, uncertainty, and fear. Circumstances can become so overwhelming that we begin questioning what we know, what we believe, and even what God has spoken.

But what if the problem is not the size of what we are facing, but our understanding of the authority of the One to whom we belong?

Scripture

Matthew 8:8–9 (KJV)

“The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.”

The centurion understood something remarkable about authority. As a soldier, he recognized that a command carried the weight of the one who issued it. He knew Jesus did not need to be physically present to heal his servant. He only needed to speak.

Jesus marveled at his faith.

The centurion recognized the authority of Jesus because he understood what it meant to be under authority himself.

The authority of Christ is not something we create. It is something we come under.

The Greek word for authority is exousia, meaning the right, jurisdiction, or delegated authority to act. Another Greek word, dynamis, refers to power, strength, or ability.

In Luke 10:19, Jesus uses both words when He declares that He has given His disciples authority (exousia) over the power (dynamis) of the enemy.

Consider what that means.

Jesus has authority over the very power that seeks to intimidate, oppress, and influence our lives. Demons recognize His authority. Darkness cannot overcome His light. Even the winds and waves obey His command.

Yet we can find ourselves overwhelmed by circumstances, allowing what we see and feel to carry more influence than what God has spoken.

There are times when our struggles reveal that we have not fully understood the authority of Jesus Christ or what it means to live under His lordship.

We cannot expect to walk confidently in His authority while refusing to surrender the areas of our lives that He desires to govern.

He has the power to heal, restore, deliver, provide, and make us whole. Yet we often exhaust ourselves trying to control what we should have surrendered to Him.

Romans 8:11 reminds us that the same Spirit who raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells in us.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead dwells in you!

You are not powerless in the presence of opposition. You do not have to allow fear to govern your thoughts, your words, or your decisions.

Stop rehearsing what the enemy is doing and begin standing on what Christ has already accomplished.

Speak His Word over your life. Declare what God has spoken concerning you. Resist the enemy in Jesus' name. Bring your family, your health, your relationships, your finances, and your future under His authority.

This does not mean every circumstance will immediately change. It means circumstances do not have the authority to determine your faith, your identity, or your confidence in God.

Before we can fully understand the authority we have been given, we must recognize the authority we are under.

You do not have to be ruled by what you are facing when you belong to the One who rules over all things.

Reflection

1. Are there areas of my life where I have allowed fear, doubt, or uncertainty to carry more authority than God's Word?

2. What situations have I been trying to control instead of surrendering them to the authority of Jesus Christ?

3. Am I living in submission to Christ and confidently standing on the authority He has given me?

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for the authority of Your Son and the power of Your Spirit dwelling within me.

Forgive me for allowing fear, doubt, and uncertainty to influence areas of my life that should be surrendered to You. Open my understanding to the authority of Jesus Christ, and teach me to walk in obedience to Your Word.

Today, I bring every burden, every fear, and every situation beyond my control under Your authority. Let my words reflect Your truth, my decisions reflect Your wisdom, and my life reflect complete submission to Your will.

Strengthen my faith to stand on what You have spoken, even when circumstances suggest otherwise.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Healing What You Learned to Hide

Some wounds grow older without ever becoming healed. God invites men to confront rejection, pain, and the beliefs that grew from it so the past no longer governs the present.

GM. I praise God every day and I am so blessed by your devotions. They encourage me to understand God and what Jesus has done for me! I have trust in my Father in heaven. Fear is leaving me and I know that He answers prayers. Waiting allows doubt to start creeping in but reading God's words have helped me to wait without being impatient. I know He hears me and has answered my prayers. Trust God's word and don't let satan fill you with doubt!!!!! I love you son.
